Description

Introducing the Nayids!
Fiery little salamander/lizard/frog/dragon-like creatures

Nayids
Two subspecies are so far known.
One includes mineral Nayids, and the other Fungal Nayids.

Body: Nayids are about the size of a large cat. They stand on all fours, roughly about a foot and a quarter. They weigh in at around 20 pounds. Males are typically larger. They have strong muscular chests and tails with lean bodies. They are very flexible with spines similar to that of a small feline. Legs are shorter, and feet are webbed and clawed. They excel at swimming and climbing. They are also relatively quick on their feet, capable of attaining speeds of up to 30-40 miles an hour, though only for very short distances. They do not care for running because the majority are clumsy when not in water or a tree. Their heads have a round appearance with relatively flat noses. Each possess two pairs of ears; One set stands up and takes in the majority of sounds, where the other is a flat ear drum, much like that of a frog. These ear drums hear nothing but the call of another Nayid, though they also help pick up vibrations when underwater.

Appearance: Nayids range in an infinite set of colors and variations. While all have similar body structures, colors and patterns are always different, though many seem to take on stripes and or spots. Depending on the mineral or fungi they produce from their body, their eyes, tongue, and claws are the same color. Each individual possesses ventral openings located on the neck (6, 3 on each side) and haunches (4, 2 on each side.) Minerals or fungi sprout from various parts of the body, usually the spine, forehead, and the joint of legs. The minerals grow and a become permanent, acting much like a callus or calcium deposit while the fungi variety could continually sprout flowering mushrooms.

Temperment: Nayids are very sociable and prefer to live in small groups. These groups usually consist of Nayids of the same variation, such as all Quartz or all Inky Cap Fungi Nayids. Though socialization outside of these groups is not so uncommon, many Nayids are fiercely aggressive and simply like to squabble with each other. Fights break out on normal grounds, but very few become dangerous fights, much less fatal ones. Nayids are typically calm and keep to themselves, but they have very short tempers, and when angry, irritated, or threatened, they are not afraid to fight. They are known for going up against adversaries larger than themselves, although many of these fights do not end well for the Nayids. When not arguing or brawling amongst each other, Nayids are incredibly affectionate. They love to rub and brush up against one another, and many like to nuzzle.

Diet: Nayids are omnivorous. They will eat almost anything, but their prime diet is that of which ever mineral or fungi their body harnesses. Nayids will not survive without this main source, so in accordance, they must live where ever this source is available. Some Nayids even forage and store this food source, allowing them to live in regions that would otherwise be uninhabitable. As long as this prime source is included consistently enough in their diet, they can support themselves on fruit, insects, and other animals.

Misc.: Nayids are primarily wingless. There are a very few rare individuals though, who do possess wings. But such wings are not large enough to support the heavy-set structure of a Nayid. These individuals cannot fly or swim, though they they can glide. Wings slow down the speed time of a running Nayid, but they allow for better balance and longer running bursts. All Nayids are capable of spitting a sludge similar to the consistency of magma. This sludge is produced by glands in the back of the throat and is possible because of the diet of Nayids (mineral or fungal eating.) In correlation, the sludge of most Nayids is very toxic. The color of their sludge take the color of whatever mineral or fungus they eat. Ventral openings found on all Nayids act as temperature regulators. The enlarged pores will release excess heat when a Nayid becomes to hot, or they will trap the heat of the sun to be used later on when sunlight is not available or when a Nayid becomes too cool. These pores also occasionally secret the toxic sludge.

More information coming soon.

The Amber and Coral Fungus Nayids are likely going to be my characters.

Let me know if you'd be interested in having your own. I'd like to make adoptables where all you simply needed to do was draw the Nayid you liked.

Cool! But are they sentient?
